August Art – Like Child’s Play by Daniel Buren
Sydney’s Carriageworks is currently displaying French contemporary artist, Daniel Buren’s playful spatial art, “Like Child’s Play”.
A room at the back of Carriageworks is split into two – the first half is a stark white space with his signature black and white stripes and further down the space are bursting with colours. 100 giant children’s wooden building blocks are strategically and symmetrically placed through the room – dwarfing visitors.
The blocks’ shape and the shape in between blocks create a plenty of selfie / photo opps for visitors.
I love how exactly the same shapes and layout feels so differently simply with the absent or the presence of colours.
“For me, colour is pure thought, and therefore completely inexpressible, every bit as abstract as a mathematical formula or a philosophical concept.” – Daniel Buren
The blocks must have been meticulously measured and placed at the exact spot as when you take photos, the diagnoal line of one side of the triangle aligned to the same side of triangle behind it, and also with the one behind it. The clean lines are so pleasing to the eyes.
Maybe because I mainly work with two dimensional and smaller work, I am always amazed at installation work that people can interact and be a part of the work.
The exhibition is on until 12 August 2018. There aren’t any other exhibition at Carriageworks so it’ll be best to visit on Saturday when Carriagework farmers market‘s on (8am to 1pm)!
