2019 Travel art
I love to travel and 2020 was meant to be a big year of traveling.
2019 started with a big move from Sydney to Tokyo, setting up our new home, looking for a job and celebrating my sister’s baby.
Many exciting events but at times it was stressful and uncertain. I felt that this year will be a year where I feel comfortable in my new home and explore Japan and beyond.
Alas, that’s not possible. As I stay at home, sometimes I don’t even leave my home for days.
Just like millions of other people around the world, the plan for 2020 have changed but I decided to look back on the many beautiful opportunities that I was lucky enough to have last year. I mean, I packed a lot! I selected one city that I visited for the every month of 2019.
Rather than flicking through the photos, I was able to reflect and appreciate the cities where I was through the process of painting.
Can you guess every city that I painted?
Here are some of the work in progress photos. I looked at many photos from last year, selected one per month and lightly sketched with pencil.
I initially started to paint one square at a time, but soon decided to paint all the sky first and build it up.
This way, I was able to look at the artwork as a whole and not too disjointed.
Here are all the locations by month from top left to bottom right:
- January is Ubud, Bali
- February is Sydney, Australia
- March is Tokyo, Japan
- April is Samarkand, Uzbekistan
- May is Prague, Czech Republic
- June is Kawagoe, Japan
- July is summer festival in Tokyo, Japan
- August is Otaru, Japan
- September is Kanazawa, Japan
- October is Rugby World Cup in Japan
- November is Heidelberg, Germany
- December is Angkor Wat, Cambodia
