Home series: Tauranga, New Zealand

The start of the famous Mount Maunganui walk
“Home” to me is Sydney but also Gold Coast but also sort of Yokohama. I have lived in each area for a decent chunk of my life and who knows how many other places I will call home and feel nostalgic about?
With an upcoming move at the back of my mind, I bought two canvases to paint a series of artwork that will make my husband feel at home when he looks at it and another that will make me feel at home when I look at it – no matter where we are.
I scrolled through the photos I snapped last year when I was in my husband’s hometown and found this shot:

Original photo – the start of Mount Maunganui walk
I asked my husband if this reminds him of home, Tauranga and as Mount Maunganui is an iconic landmark, he said yes.
Somehow, I painted 90% of the painting 8 or so weeks ago yet I stopped until last weekend.

Layering up….
I am pleased with the finished product, especially this thicker canvas and continuing the landscape all the way to the edge which adds another dimension to the painting.

A thick-edged canvas that continues the landscape
The pair to this painting will be a beach scenery from Burleigh on the Gold Coast. A good candidate for the painting is a photo I took a few years ago on the beach just before a classic afternoon downpour. However, as I’m visiting the Gold Coast in a couple of weeks, I will hold off painting anything in case I capture something quintessentially ‘home’ to me.
