In July 2021, I received my first art commission 🎉.

My first art client had seen my instagram and liked my artworks😃.

He moved out of his shared house to live on his own for the first time in the his life and wanted a piece of art to hang on his wall to make the apartment his home instead of a place to work and sleep.

His brief was simple and broad – an abstract avocado for a dimension of 60cmx60cm.
There was a lot of room to play with!

I roughly started to doodle different texture and shapes.

As before, referencing materials on Pinterest has been helpful. I researched ‘masculine interior’ and color palettes that will work for a men’s home imagining how the piece may complement my client’s home.

Sharing colour palettes and variations through the art making process with the client allowed for a collaborative art making.  His feedback ensured that the end result will fit in with the client’s aesthetics, even if he wasn’t able to express what he liked and what he didn’t like.

Not only avocado, the client has a passion for music and guitar so I incorporated an element that naturally blended well with the shape of an avocado.

The two tone color palette was selected with a nod to the fruit itself 🥑 but more subdued hue to create a piece that (hopefully) will be pleasant to look at everyday but not get bored of.

The artwork was digitally printed at ACCEA printing on canvas.  The end result wasn’t as dark as the photo but I am happy with the clean look for an interior decoration.

Rather than creating artwork guided by either my preference or theme like birthday, the commission work gave me an additional theme and expectation to produce something that not only I am happy with but a paying customer. This was a fun and rewarding experience for me and grateful to have an opportunity.

I created a black and white monotone version which is available on society6 and Redbubble.
