In 2023, I created a trilingual picture book titled Pigeon, 鳩, Tauben in English, Japanese, and German. I used Procreate to digitally illustrate each page after sketching pigeons by hand.
Since then, I’ve shared the book with two publishers and several friends and family members, gaining valuable feedback. Along the way, I’ve also explored color palettes and illustration trends by attending exhibitions and reviewing other picture books.
Armed with these insights, I’ve decided to revisit the illustrations for Pigeon. While I’m still working on the updates, here are some of the changes I’ve made:
2023 Version: I experimented with adding patterns to the outlines and pigeons using Procreate’s clipping mask feature, layering blues, purples, and grays. A limited color palette gave the book a consistent look.
2025 Version: The outlined illustrations are now gone, replaced with a cleaner, more modern look. I’ve kept the 2023 outlines as guides but left them out of the final version. I also used a brighter color palette with more shading, giving the pigeons a three-dimensional, rounded appearance.
This is the second time I’ve revisited and redrawn all the illustrations for a picture book. I’m excited to see my progress as a picture book maker and illustrator in less than a year.
What do you think of the 2025 version of Pigeon compared to the 2023 one?
2023年に、英語、日本語、ドイツ語で『Pigeon, 鳩, Tauben』という絵本を作りました。
イラストは、手書きで鳩をスケッチした後、Procreateを使ってデジタルで描きました。
その後、この絵本を2つの出版社や数人の友人・家族に感想をいただきました。
また、その過程で、展示会に参加したり、他の絵本を読んだりして、色彩パレットやイラストのトレンドについて学びました。
これらの学びを元に、再び『Pigeon』のイラストを見直すことに決めました。
まだ全ての修正は終わっていませんが、変更した点をいくつか紹介します。
2023年版
Procreateのクリッピングマスク機能を使い、鳩のアウトラインや鳩自体にパターンを追加する実験をしました。
青、紫、グレーを重ねて、統一感のある色合いを作り出しました。
2025年版
アウトラインをなくし、よりシンプルで現代的なデザインにしました。
2023年版のアウトラインはガイドとして使用しましたが、最終的なバージョンには含めませんでした。
また、明るい色合いと影を加えて、鳩たちに立体感と丸みを持たせました。
これは、2度目に全てのイラストを見直し、描き直した絵本です。1年半で、絵本作家・イラストレーターとしての進展を感じられることに嬉しく思っています。
